Judas Noir is an adaptation of Stephen Adly Guirgis' play "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot". This story follows the court trial of Judas Iscariot, the disciple notoriously known for betraying Jesus Christ. While this case gets unravelled, parallels are drawn between the persecution of the Jewish people (during this archaic time), and Black citizens of today. This play deals with themes of: betrayal, regret, forgiveness, and the loopholes/flaws that exist in our justice systems presently, and potentially in the afterlife.
Why an All Black Cast?
I wanted to draw parallels to the different yet similar persecution faced between ancient Jews, and modern days African-Americans. The Romans were relentless and had the government on their side, which is a situation that is a bit too familiar in today's society. I think there is definitely something beautiful, truthful, and bold about telling this story with only black voices. Judas a black brother, hurting his own black brother, and living with that. The plethora of times "black on black" violence is thrown in our faces to defend police brutality is sickening. However, many fail to realize the intricacies rooted in Black on black violence, and this show debunks that. I think our problems we are facing today, stem much deeper past slavery. This is why this play is still relevant. This story needs to be told and in this way, because there is power in taking ownership of our history.
