Event Notes

× Join Urjo Kareda Emerging Artist Resident Christine Quintana for a preshow dinner party that will provide additional insight, compelling discussion and a provoking conversation about the night’s show. Special guests will muse on a key question inspired by the play, and extend the conversation to all present. Get to know your neighbor, and go deeper into the themes and critical questions on stage this season at Tarragon.

December 8th 2017: “Music and Theatre” Mr. Shi and his Lover. How do modern musical theatre creators define musical theatre? What do we love (or hate) about musicals, and what is the future of music and theatre?

January 26th 2018: “Is Shakespeare For All Time?” Hamlet. Fellow writer Ben Jonson famously wrote about Shakespeare, ‘he was not of an age, but for all time’. Um, sure, but we now see that Shakespeare’s works are full of sexism, racism, and controversial material. What can Shakespeare teach us now, when interpreted with a modern lens – and which plays should stay on the shelf?

March 9th 2018: “Theatre and Reconciliation” Cottagers and Indians. Toronto has been the site of storytelling and performance for thousands of years. One of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action was for the Canada Council to provide funding for collaborations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, as part of reconciliation. What role can theatres play in the process of reconciliation? What can non-Indigenous artists and audience members contribute?

April 20th 2018: “Social Media and Theatre” Girls Like That. Love it or hate it, social media has made a huge impact on the way we interact and live our lives. What effect does social media have on the way we create and consume art, and does it have a place on our stages (or in our audiences?)

The discussion and dinner with begin at 6pm. Bring your own dinner or for $20 enjoy a family style meal from Aviv Restaurant.
